MFSA research plans are in place and plans are being made to conduct the following project

MFSA research plans are in place and plans are being made to conduct the following project:

Plant Growth Regulators, Parlay in Grasses

There is a prairie wide effort to have the Parlay label expanded. Regardless of whether additional crop tolerance data is needed for registration, this will be small plot research, and will aim to test the efficacy of Parlay on a variety of different grass seed crops. A protocol has been developed which will be used by all of the associations involved. The Peace River area will be conducting trials on creeping red fescue and timothy. Saskatchewan is planning on having a several sites as well, however the crop types have not been finalized. The MFSA is planning to conduct trials with timothy, tall fescue, plus one other grass. There will be 7 treatments, which includes three rates, and two timings. Funding for this project has been approved by ARDI.

Parlay in Perennial Ryegrass

This will be a replicated, field scale project in established perennial ryegrass fields. Treatments will include two different rates of Parlay, and two different rates of nitrogen. Both lodging and yield will be measured. Funding for this project has been approved by ARDI.

Plant Growth Regulators in Alfalfa

This project will be a joint initiative between the MFSA and the Alfalfa Seed Commission (AB). The MFSA will have one site. This will be more of a screening trial, looking for the best plant growth regulator to use moving forward. Poducts currently being considered include Parlay, Manipulator, Apogee, Terpal, and Bonzi. We have applied to PESAI for funding.

Fungicides in Grasses

This will be the second year a three year project.  As in the past it will be a field scale trial, looking at different fungicides to be used in grasses. Three fields will be selected and three different fungicides will be used. Leaf disease ratings and yield data will be collected. Fungicides to be used include Quilt and Priaxor. Funding for this project has been approved by ARDI.

Rejuvenation

This project will look at using vertical tillage to rejuvenate both grass seed crops, and alfalfa seed crops.  The alfalfa seed crops will be tilled early spring, and the grass seed crops will be tilled in the fall post-harvest. This will mimic the most commonly used timings in the industry.  There will be a treated strip, an untreated strip, and three replications. Plant stands and yield data will be collected.

Foxtail Barley Control in Tall Fescue

This project will be coordinated by Ag Canada.  Several herbicides will be screened for efficacy and crop tolerance. Potential products to be tested include Kerb, Everest, Zidua, Valterra, Simazine, Nortron, Callisto, Prowl, and Goal.

Night Flowering Catchfly Control in Alfalfa

Several herbicides, at one site, will be screened for efficacy and crop tolerance. Both fall and spring applications will be used.  Products to be tested include Embutox, Telar, Velpar, Viper, Nortron, and combinations of those products.

Pre-Seed Alfalfa Herbicides

This project will look at the application of herbicides prior to seeding. One site will be selected.  Products to be tested will include different rates of Valterra, Authority, and Zidua. Crop tolerance ratings, and plant stand counts will be taken.
